Biography I started my academic career in the Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge. After several years outside academia, my MA at Waseda University was on the prisoner of war issue in Anglo-Japanese relations, an interest that I followed up during my PhD at the University of Tokyo researching Japanese troops left overseas after the Pacific War. I now research communications and diversity.

Research outline My research focuses on three areas, with a focus on minorities as a common axis.
Diversity: Women are underrepresented in STEM fields, and one project looks for barriers to participation in Japan. Another looks at Japanese campus climate for LGBT students.
Science communication: I examine university science communication in non-English speaking countries, and also look at how crowdfunding is used by Japanese researchers.
