Research outline Microorganisms produce diverse compounds (secondary metabolites) with useful bioactivities, such as the antibiotics penicillin and vancomycin. These activities stem from complex chemical structures, indicating that microbes have acquired enzymes catalyzing diverse reactions. By elucidating how secondary metabolites are biosynthesized, we aim to identify the enzymes and clarify their molecular mechanisms, enabling their use as biocatalysts for microbial production of useful chemicals.
