Date of activity: October 4, 2017

A delegation from the Australian National University (ANU) headed by Vice-Chancellor Brian P. Schmidt visited UTokyo on Wednesday, October 4th, 2017, and met with President Gonokami, Executive Vice President Haneda, and Prof. Yusuke Yokoyama.

ANU and UTokyo signed the Memorandum of Strategic Partnership Engagement on March 2015, and since then both universities have been implementing a wide variety of collaborations under the framework of the Strategic Partnerships Project. Among the topics discussed during the meeting, the presidents discussed how to promote further research and educational exchanges between the two universities.

Following the meeting with President Gonokami, Vice-Chancellor Schmidt, who is the 2011 Nobel Laureate in Physics, gave a special lecture entitled “The State of the Universe” in the Chemistry Building attended by approximately 200 UTokyo students, staff, and affiliated guests. The audience clearly enjoyed his easy-to-understand presentation of his research, and Prof. Schmidt answered a lot of questions that were raised from the floor in the Q and A session.
