Report on the 16th International Symposium of the Institute Network for Biomedical Sciences

The 16th International Symposium of the Institute Network for Biomedical Sciences was held on November 11-12, 2021, hosted by the Institute of Molecular Embryology and Genetics, Kumamoto University (IMEG). It was held in hybrid format  (partially onsite, partially online), due to concerns over the spread of the novel coronavirus. The theme of this year's symposium was "The Front Lines of Biomedical Research on the Nervous System".

The International Symposium of the Institute Network was launched in 2004, and is hosted in rotation by the participating institutions.

This year, 12 institutions in total participated:
Cancer Research Institute of Kanazawa University (CRI)
Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University (RIMD)
Institute for Protein Research, Osaka University (IPR)
Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences, Kyoto University (INFRONT)
Medical Institute of Bioregulation, Kyushu University (MIB)
Institute of Development, Aging and Cancer, Tohoku University (IDAC)
Medical Research Institute, Tokyo Medical and Dental University (MRI)
The Institute of Medical Science, The University of Tokyo (IMSUT)
Institute for Genetic Medicine, Hokkaido University (IGM)
Institute of Advanced Medical Sciences, Tokushima University (IAMS)
Institute of Molecular Embryology and Genetics, Kumamoto University (IMEG)
Institute for Molecular and Cellular Regulation, Gunma University (IMCR)

Two faculty members and one graduate student from IMSUT participated and presented their research results.

Mr. Tomohiro Yabushita, a graduate student in the doctoral course at IMSUT, received the first prize award in the "Best Short-talk" category, for his talk titled "Genome-wide CRISPR activation screen identifies multiple clinically actionable resistance mechanisms with DNA-hypomethylating agents in myeloid malignancies."

Next year, the symposium will be hosted by the Cancer Research Institute of Kanazawa University (CRI).
