Asian university leaders discuss outlook for AI in higher education
TV program explores how generative AI will impact higher education and the future as envisioned by Asia’s top university executives at symposium
In April 2025, top executives of Asia’s leading universities gathered at a symposium hosted by the University of Tokyo, where they discussed the role of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education.

Synopsis
The symposium was held as part of the annual summit of the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA), which was formed in 2017 through a proposal by China’s Tsinghua University. The AUA aims to strengthen exchanges and collaboration among Asian universities, anticipating Asia’s role as a growth hub for the global economy and academia in the future. The alliance comprises top universities in Asian countries, including the University of Tokyo. While the development of generative AI has been led by Western countries, the NHK Educational TV program explores how the university leaders, who have an impact on national policy, approach the fast-growing technology and its application.
