Inaugural Symposium of the Institute for AI and Beyond held

The Institute for AI and Beyond, a world-class AI research institute established by the University of Tokyo, SoftBank Corp., SoftBank Group Corp. and Yahoo Japan Corporation and started joint research in July 2020, held its inaugural symposium online (organized by the Institute for AI and Beyond, the University of Tokyo) on February 20, 2021. At the symposium, panelists from Japan and abroad were invited to discuss the significance and value of AI in society by asking - Are we pursuing a "smarter" Artificial Intelligence? Exploring the significance of AI and its impact on society.- Also, 10 research leaders introduced their various research activities in "basic research," which aims to create a new academic field by integrating AI with basic technology research and other academic fields. About 3,000 people registered and nearly 1,700 people participated from Japan and abroad.
 
Following the congratulatory remarks by President Gonokami of the University of Tokyo and Chairman & CEO Son of SoftBank Group Corp., a panel discussion was held with Audrey Tang, Digital minister of Taiwan, Sputniko!, artist/designer, and other panelists, then in a special dialog Professor Teruo Fujii, executive vice president, who will be assuming the presidency of the University of Tokyo in this April and Mr. Junichi Miyakawa, who will become President & CEO of SoftBank Corp. in April, exchanged opinions actively on the exciting use of AI in the future society.
