The Center for Research and Development of Higher Education at the University of Tokyo provides a series of events for those interested in developing their teaching skills: UTokyo FD Open.
UTokyo FD Open is a series of independent workshops and sessions entirely in English, open to anyone (faculty, researchers, and PhD students) regardless of their institutions. The topics of UTokyo FD Open address key educational topics (class design, rubrics’ design, syllabus design, flipped classroom, peer instruction, etc.) and emphasize reflection + discussion + practice (RDP). In the ongoing 2025–2026 edition, the workshops scheduled for 2026 will be held in person, following six online workshops in 2025.
The next upcoming workshop of the UTokyo FD Open is “Class Design & Micro-Teaching.” The workshop's details are as follows:
- Date: February 12th, 2026, 9:00-16:00
- About: In this workshop, we learn about how to design, structure, and deliver a class. The participants prepare in advance a brief class that they teach to their peers and for which they receive feed back. Later, we discuss this feedback and further ideas to improve the design and delivery of the class.
- Language: English
- Participants: 10 people (faculty, researchers and Ph.D. students from all institutions are welcome)
- Instructor: Dr. Gabriel Hervas (Lecturer, University of Barcelona)
- Certificate: Certificates of completion will be issued if participants complete either (1) Class Design & Microteaching + 1 additional workshop/seminar OR (2) 3 workshops other than Class Design & Microteaching
- Fee: Free of charge
