Biography Masaaki Sato is a general thoracic surgeon at the University of Tokyo Hospital and professor at the University of Tokyo, graduate school of medicine. He graduated Kyoto University, Faculty of Medicine in 1999 and earned his PhD degree in University of Toronto in 2009. He came back to Japan as an Assistant Professor, Dep. Thoracic Surgery, Kyoto University Hospital in 2011. He moved to the University of Tokyo Hospital in 2015.

Research outline The research focuses are lung transplantation and lung mapping for precise minimally invasive lung resection. He proposed the concept of restrictive allograft syndrome (RAS) as a novel phenotype of chronic rejection after lung transplantation in 2010. In 2012 he developed a novel technique of virtual assisted lung mapping (VAL-MAP). Ever since, he has been engaged in further development of this technique, which let to the development of VAL-MAP 2.0, combining dye and microcoil lung mapping.
