Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani
In cooperation with the Kavli IPMU, UTokyo, Go Global Gateway delivered the very first online film screening event on August 6.

This time, we screened a documentary film, entitled “Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani.” This film introduces Dr. Mariam Mirzakhani (1977-2017), who was a mathematician at Stanford University. In 2014, she became the first Iranian and the first woman who received the Fields Medal, which is regarded as the highest honors in a field of mathematics.
Before the screening, Professor Yukari Ito from Kavli IPMU introduced the content of the film. The screening was followed by Professor Ito’s talk on her experiences abroad. Participants asked Professor Ito a lot about the film, mathematics, and her international experiences. Professor Ito generously answered all those questions.
