現代を危機の時代と捉える人もいるだろう。気候変動は止まらず、2019年からの新型コロナウィルス (SARS COVID-19) の流行は各国の貧しい人々に最も甚大な影響を与え、格差や貧困の実態をさらけ出した。資本主義という仕組みを作り上げることで人間が数百年拡大し続けてきた熾烈な経済活動が引き起こした歪みが、今になって噴出しているようにも見える。そのような時代に、あえて日本で学ぶ私たちが西洋経済史・経営史に取り組むとしたら、その意味はなんだろうか。歴史研究とは、世界が直面する課題を鋭く認識し、地球の将来と課題解決をみすえて過去から謙虚に学ぼうとする知的営為である。そう信じて研究を続けてきた筆者の成果をまとめたのが「黎明期資本主義の手なずけ」(taming capitalism before its triumph) をテーマとする本書だ。

教科書やインターネットでは、利益が否定された中世から、経済発展を経て、利益追及が社会的・宗教的に正当化された近代的市場社会へ移行したという見取り図を目にすることがある。社会学者マックス・ヴェーバーらが普及させた以上のような構図が正しいとすれば、近・現代資本主義の行き過ぎに歯止めをかけるために台頭したのが、近年ニュースなどで目にする企業の社会的責任 (CSR) やSDGsそしてESG投資 (environmental, social and corporate governance) という新たな考え方である、ということになるだろう。
 
本書では、ウィリアム・シェイクスピアやダニエル・デフォーの生きた近世イギリス (およそ1550年-1700年) に注目することで、以上のような見取り図を覆す証拠を数多く提出した。当時のパンフレットや議会議事録、手紙や日記、劇や木版画やその他の文学テクストを横断的に分析することで分かったのは、およそ400年前を生きた人々も、現代の我々と同じように、民間ビジネスの社会的責任や社会貢献の可能性に強い関心を抱いていた。しかしビジネスを通した社会課題の解決や国家的ミッションへの貢献は一筋縄ではいかないものだった、ということである。
 
実はビジネスの社会的有用性を掘り下げて考える伝統は古く、ヨーロッパでは実は少なくとも13世紀までさかのぼる。ルネサンスを謳歌したイタリアも、ビジネスを都市国家の課題解決に役立てようと人たちで溢れていた。16世紀になっていわゆる絶対王政が勃興すると、西ヨーロッパ各国が戦争と商業の両者で覇権争いをするようになり、ビジネスは国家権力と共生関係・癒着関係を結ぶことになる。ビジネスの社会貢献の約束は、そこでは国家権力の増強や宮廷に出入りする人々の私利私欲を追求するための口実として悪用されることもあった。では、そうした社会貢献の約束は、どのように実現され、時に濫用され、また、政治家、劇作家、出版業界、その読者である市井の人々は、ビジネスの社会貢献の不履行 (やそれを悪用した不正) に対しどのような反応をみせたのだろうか。この問題を「資本主義の手なずけ」として問題化し、始めて体系的に分析したのが本書である。
 
企業の社会的責任の知られざる前史に初めて光を当てた本書は、ビジネスと社会の未来を考える専門家、アナリスト、起業家、ジャーナリストなどに多くの示唆を与えうるだろう。歴史研究とは、忘れられた時代についての事実をたんに積み上げるものでも、書き手がエビデンスに自由に解釈をくわえるものでもない。歴史を学ぶことで、私たちが生きる時代に新たな視点をもたらすことができるのである。
