本書は、「図」を共通テーマとして、心理学、教育学、哲学、情報工学、認知科学など幅広い視点から検討した研究論文が収められている。なぜ「図」に着目する必要があるのだろうか。例えば、近年の世界的な教育動向として、学習の内容のみならず、社会に出た後にも利用できるような力を教育の中で保証しようとする動きが見られる。「21世紀型スキル」や「キー・コンピテンシー」とはまさにそうした流れにある概念である。キー・コンピテンシーの中で重要視されていることの一つに、言語、シンボル、テキストなどの道具を用いる力というものが挙げられている。本書で取り上げている「図」を用いる力とは、まさにキー・コンピテンシーが目指すものと合致している。
本書は、2016年にアメリカのフィアデルフィアで開催された第9回、International Conference on the Theory and Application of Diagrams (Diagrams 2016) に合わせて編集された書籍である。この学会には、冒頭で述べたような様々な分野から図に関心がある研究者が集まる。学会は2年に一度行われ、毎回、非常に密度の濃い領域横断的な議論を行っている。本書は学会のproceedingsとしての性格も兼ねる。ただし、フルリサーチペーパー (15ページ) の採択率は30%台であり、分量もその厳しさも通常の学会誌と同様のレベルの研究論文が収められている。本雑誌のフルリサーチペーパーは、査読つき学術研究論文のデータベースであるSCOPUSにも登録されている。
本書の内容について概観してみよう。収められている論文はいくつかのカテゴリーに分けられている。Cognitive Aspects of Diagrams、Logic and Diagrams、Diagrams and Education、Design Principle for Diagrams、Diagrams Layout などである。Cognitive Aspects of Diagramsには、人間はどのようにして図を理解しているのか、そのメカニズムなどに関する研究が掲載されている。言葉で提示されているだけではわかりにくかったものが、図で提示されることによって分かりやすくなったという経験がある人は少なくないだろう。なぜそうした現象が起こるのか、認知的な観点から明らかにしている研究などが含まれる。
Diagrams and Educationでは、心理学や教育の視点からの図に関する研究が収められている。例えば、学習者が自ら図を使うようになるためにはどのような働きかけが効果的なのかといった研究が行われている。Manalo & Uesaka (2016) は、教師は図の重要性を語るのみならず、実際に活用し、その効果を実感するとともに、実際に使えるだけのスキルを身につける必要性を主張しており、大学生を対象とした実践を通じて、その効果を示している。Uesaka, Igarashi, & Suetsugu (2016) は、21世紀に生きる学習者が身につけるべき重要な資質・能力として、対立する意見の背景を考え、両者が納得するような解決策を提案するような力 (multi-perspective integration) を挙げており、こうしたことを実現するために図 (ここでは、図の一部として表も含む) が活用できることを実証的に明らかにしている。
この他にも、Design Principle for DiagramsやDiagrams Layoutにおいて、効果的な図を構成する際の原則や、その具体例などが検討されている。異なる研究領域の中で議論し、深めるという領域横断性は、現在の研究の特徴である。「図」という切り口に着目し、こうした現代的研究のあり方をよく反映した研究書籍と言える。
