このタイトルを日本語にするなら「みんなで見上げよう、星空を」としたい。ここには人類共通の2つの課題がある。人間活動により失われつつある、「見上げたら満天の星」という夜空と、平和で安心できる環境で誰でもそうした夜空を見上げられることとである。この世界はどのようにして出来てきたのだろうか、どうして私たちはここにいるのだろうか。こうした根源的な疑問は、二足歩行により遠くを見渡せるようになった頃からずっと、そして誰しもが心に抱いているのではないか。
副題を日本語で表現するなら「女性天文学者自身が語る」。つまりこの業界では日本以外の国であってさえ、フラットな関係性の中で女性が専門の仕事に集中できるわけではない。時代背景の中で自分が何を考え、(重力以外の) 何に惹かれ、何を乗り越えようとしたか、それを自分の言葉で表明したかったのである。そのため、ぜひとも原文で読むことをおすすめしたい。英語には女性言葉・男性言葉の違いがほとんど無い。自分の意見を明確に表現する際には、日本語よりも英語の方が言いやすいように思う。
本書はアメリカ天文学会の会員を中心に、37人から原稿を集め、編纂したものであるから、「みんなで」とは言え、執筆者がアメリカ人に偏っている。だが、他の国、しかも先進国とみなされていない国の出身者も含まれており、そうした人々が活躍をしていることも確かだ。
さて、アメリカ天文学会会員としては希少種の日本人がなぜ寄稿できたのか。カリフォルニアに住んで働いているのに、所属が日本の機関。何をしているのだろうと不思議に思われたようだ。こちらにとっては、日本の天文学研究の盛んなことを売り込む絶好の機会である。「日本 (人) が世界最大級の望遠鏡を作れるわけがない」と言われながら、すばる望遠鏡を作った世代にとって、ここぞとばかりに日本の天文学者たちが、メーカーの方々とまさに肩を並べて望遠鏡を作ってきた様子を書くことができた。詳しくはぜひ本書を読んでほしい。
原稿依頼から締め切りまであまり間がなかった。まだパンデミック只中で、夏休みもあまり外に行けない。2021年の夏、およそ1週間で原稿を書いた。出版は2022年夏である。ロサンジェルス北東のパサデナ市で、対面としてはパンデミック明け最初のアメリカ天文学会が開催され、印刷所から本が届いた。出版社が会場に設けたブースで段ボール箱から取り出した本のページで手が切れそうだった。
ハワイ島マウナケア山頂域のすばる望遠鏡も含む風景が表紙を飾るこの本を、進路選択に悩んでいる若者が手にして欲しい、逆風・反対があっても自分のやりたいことをあきらめないことが大切と呼びかけたい。またそうした若者を支える・励ます立場の人々にも、同じ呼びかけをしたい。理工系に進んでくれると仲間が増えてうれしいが、そうじゃなくても良い。自分がこれだと思えるものを見つけて、取り組んでほしいと思う。
