「PEAK開設記念シンポジウムのご案内（報道機関向け質疑応答あり）」

このたび、英語による学部プログラム（Programs in English at Komaba：PEAK）開設にあたり、同プログラムの設立経緯、理念、カリキュラムのご紹介を兼ね、PEAKの在り方を考えるシンポジウムを下記のとおり開催いたします。
なお、シンポジウム終了後に報道機関の皆様を対象とした質疑応答の時間を設けておりますので、是非とも取材・記事の掲載をお願いいたしたく、ご案内申し上げます。

PEAKについて：
2012年度冬学期に発足する英語プログラムPEAKは、東京大学の学部レベルでははじめてとなる英語による授業だけで学位が取得できるプログラムです。その理念は、書類と面接審査を経て世界各地から選ばれた学生が、東京大学がこれまで培ってきた教養教育のエッセンスを身につけるとともに、このために準備された全く新しい二つのコース（「国際日本研究コース」と「国際環境学コース」）に所属して、グローバルな観点から日本および世界が抱える問題を理解することを目指すというものです。それは、課題先進国としての日本の経験を、広く東アジアや世界に開くことによって活用するという新しい学問を樹立することでもあります。
具体的には、「国際日本研究コース」を専攻する学生は、東アジアの過去、現在、未来を、日本の近代の経験を中心に、学際的な視座から学び、グローバル社会にふさわしい批判的思考能力と教養を身につけることを目指します。その上で、東アジアおよび世界における建設的・創造的な対話に参加し、貢献することが期待されています。
一方、「国際環境学コース」では、物質循環のメカニズムや生態系のしくみ、環境評価の方法などに関する科学的知識と方法論やその意義・限界などに基本的な理解力を備えた上で、歴史的な背景や国際関係を踏まえ、広義の経済的・政策的提言や立案ができる人材の育成を目指します。
そして、このコースの教育は、東京大学教養学部の教員を中心に、その他の学部・研究所の教員、さらには世界の主要大学から招聘された客員教員も担当する予定です。卒業後は国内外の政府機関、NGO、グローバル企業などへの就職、国際人材養成プログラム(Graduate Program on Global Society)や国際環境学プログラム(Graduate Program on Environmental Science)をはじめとする東京大学の大学院、海外の大学院への進学などが考えられています。

PEAK INAUGURAL SYMPOSIUM

The College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo announces the establishment of PEAK (Programs in English at Komaba), the first undergraduate degree programs at the University to be taught entirely in English, starting in October of 2012. The inaugural symposium will introduce the concept and background of this new project and will be followed by a special question and answer session for members of the press. We would appreciate it if you would consider attending the symposium and the subsequent Q/A session and report the news of this exciting development at our university.

PEAK:
PEAK (Programs in English at Komaba) is the first-ever English-language undergraduate degree programs offered at the University of Tokyo. It provides the University’s traditional liberal arts education, combined with two entirely new specialized programs (International Program on Japan in East Asia and International Program on Environmental Sciences), to a group of selected students from all over the world. It breaks new academic ground by sharing with the rest of Asia and the world, the knowledge and insights of the various critical issues Japan has experienced in the past. PEAK students will learn to think of the challenges Japan and the rest of the world face today from a truly global perspective.
Students majoring in Japan in East Asia will gain a global and interdisciplinary understanding of East Asia’s past, present and future with a particular focus on Japan. The program encourages students to develop skills and knowledge in order to foster constructive dialogues within East Asia and the around the world.
Students majoring in Environmental Sciences will study this complex multidisciplinary subject from many different viewpoints including environmental and economic policy, ethics and jurisprudence. They will learn the mechanisms of material cycles and ecosystems as well as such topics as the significance and limits of scientific knowledge and environmental assessment methodologies. The program encourages students to gain well-rounded environmental knowledge to design and implement integrated approaches to current and future environmental issues.
The classes will be taught primarily by professors of the College of Arts and Sciences and also by those of other faculties and institutes at the University of Tokyo. Scholars from major universities around the world will also be invited as visiting professors. Students graduating from PEAK may pursue careers in governments, NGOs, and multinational corporations; they may also pursue advanced degrees at leading graduate programs around the world, including our Graduate Program on Global Society and Graduate Program on Environmental Sciences.
