“When I was 19” is a series of online events in which invited speakers with global experience tell stories of the time when they were as old as current first- or second-year students. On May 25, 2020, we invited Mr. Daisuke Kan, a UTokyo graduate currently working as the Executive Director of Cheerio Corporation, to give a talk entitled, “From UTokyo Studying Abroad, Then Back To Japan.” Undergraduate students who have registered for the Go Global Gateway program, were eligible to apply for this event. Students who participated in this event actively interacted with Mr. Kan.

In his talk, Mr. Kan talked about his experience of studying at Stanford University, his career path to the Executive Director of Cheerio Corporation, corporate social activities he has led so far, and advice for the students who participated in this event.

His talk was followed by a group discussion session in which the participants discussed questions they wanted to ask Mr. Kan. This was a great opportunity for them to share their reflections on Mr. Kan’s talk.

In a question and answer session, the participants asked Mr. Kan various questions such as tips for developing their global competence in the COVID-19 crisis and the way Mr. Kan runs his company. The interaction with Mr. Kan gave the participants a lot of insights as well as inspiration.

We are planning to hold similar events for students who have registered for the Go Global Gateway program. Please join our future events!
