The Go Global Gateway program organizes a series of lectures called “When I was 19” for students enrolled in the program. This event invites people with a variety of international experiences to talk about what they thought at the age of 19 and careers after graduation from the university.

For the third round of “When I was 19” in the academic year 2021, we invited Ms. Kei Kawana. She is a graduate of UTokyo and a founder of the Neighbor’s Farm in Hino city, Tokyo.

The title of the event was “When I was 19: From UTokyo to Neighbor’s Farm”. Beginning with her experiences of field work programs in Philippines and Sri Lanka during her study at UTokyo, she shared stories including her internship experience at an agricultural enterprise, her decision to earn her living from agriculture, her working experiences at an agricultural corporation, and the establishment of Neighbor’s Farm. She also talked about the principle of her farm, its connections with a local community, and the value of agricultural industry.

After the talk given by Ms. Kawana, participants actively discussed with each other in small groups and then came back to the plenary session in which they asked her various questions. Ms. Kawana generously answered all these questions.

In her talk, Ms. Kawana asked participants a question “What does it mean to be a global citizen?”. It gave them an opportunity to rethink their daily activities and the globalization.

The Go Global Gateway program will organize a variety of events for the registrants. We look forward to your participation in our future events!
