The University of Tokyo attaches great importance to global education and encourages students to study abroad and participate in international activities.
		This time, we are planning an exciting event with H.E. Ms. Julia LONGBOTTOM CMG, British Ambassador to Japan.
		H.E. Ms. Julia LONGBOTTOM CMG will deliver a lecture titled: In conversation with Julia Longbottom, the first woman to be British Ambassador to Japan. Following the lecture, she will engage in a dialogue with President Teruo Fujii, Executive Vice President Kaori Hayashi and students. This event is moderated by Vice President of UTokyo and Director of the Center for Global Education(GlobE), Professor Yujin Yaguchi. We invite all UTokyo students join this informative, meaningful, and inspiring event!
		
		H.E. Ms. Julia LONGBOTTOM CMG (Biography provided by British Embassy Tokyo):
		Julia Longbottom was appointed British Ambassador to Japan in March 2021. She has spent over half her career as a diplomat working on North-East Asian affairs. This includes two previous postings to Tokyo. In the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London, she led on Hong Kong Nationality and Immigration issues in 1994 to 1997, and headed the Far Eastern, then China, Department in 2009 to 2012. She was later the FCO’s Director for Consular Services globally (2016 to 2020). She established the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s initial International Coronavirus Task Force in February 2020 and was its Director of it until July 2020. She has held a range of other roles including Director of Strategy and Human Resources in UK Trade & Investment (2006 to 2009), Consul General in Warsaw (2003-2006), and Head of Political/EU affairs in the British Embassy in The Hague (1998-2002). 
Julia is the first female British Ambassador to Japan and was one of the pioneers of job sharing overseas in HM Diplomatic Service. She is a champion for women’s sport. Her daughter Natalie Sciver-Brunt is the Captain of the England Women’s Cricket Team and was awarded the ICC Women’s World Cricketer of the Year in 2022 and 2023. Julia graduated from Cambridge University (Jesus College) in 1986 with a degree in French and German.
