Before traveling abroad, you must take out overseas travel insurance, study abroad insurance etc. covering the period from your departure till you return home. Please note that Japanese overseas travel insurance, study abroad insurance etc. cannot be purchased after leaving Japan. Also, if you are asked to take out the insurance designated by the host university, please purchase it as well.
Enrolling in the “Futai Kaigaku” is one of the necessary conditions for participating in some study abroad programs. (This rule is applicable to programs offered by the Division of Global Campus Initiatives (USTEP, UC Berkley/Davis Programs, other short-term programs, etc.). Students who are going to participate in these programs offered by the Division of Global Campus Initiatives have to purchase the Japan Educational Exchanges and Services’ (JEES) “Futai Kaigaku（付帯海学）” which covers the duration from the date of departure (date when you leave your residence in Japan) to the date of return (date you arrive back in your residence in Japan) . (The expenses required for the insurance are to be borne by students themselves.)
As a means of safety management during the period of the Program, you may take out the Overseas Student Safety Management Assistance (OSSMA) from Emergency Assistance Japan Co., Ltd. at your own expense. Some Faculty/Graduate School have made its purchase mandatory, so please check and follow the instructions of your Faculty/Graduate School . However, since AY2021/22, purchase of OSSMA is mandatory when participating in USTEP and the University-wide Short-term Study Abroad Programs. The cost of the insurance is to be borne by students themselves. If you wish to purchase this, please read the following website carefully and complete the necessary procedures before you travel (including making payment).
※When filling in the application form, please choose "Z02 グローバルキャンパス推進本部担当プログラム/Program of the Division of Global Campus Initiatives" for the "Program code" section of the application form.
※Please put your OSSMA user ID in the "Notification of Going Abroad" form if purchased. If the OSSMA User ID is not fixed by the submission due date of the "Notification of Going Abroad", please submit the "Notification of Going Abroad" again once the User ID has been fixed.
Those who take out OSSMA can use the online help service, which is available 24hours/ 365days both in Japanese/ English, as an emergency contact during your travelling overseas. To those who don’t, be sure to check for yourselves the contact details of the faculty/graduate school you belong to or the office which conducts the program.
Students have more opportunities to travel abroad than before, and the opportunities will expand more in the future. Taking such situations into account, the University of Tokyo published the “Overseas Travel Risk Management Guidebook”. Students are expected to read the guidebook thoroughly and understand the risks in travel overseas, and take steps to ensure your safety.
