The University of Tokyo has launched a campaign aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion on campus, and making the university a place where people from diverse backgrounds can thrive. The initiative, called UTokyo D&I Campaign 2022, started in March 2022. Here, we introduce plans and actions related to D&I initiatives from members of the UTokyo community, including deans and directors of various UTokyo organizations.

We believe that the key to further development of science lies in diversity. We also have a small series of articles in our magazine, The Rigakubu News, to help our constituents think about diversity’s importance together. Check out two of the articles below! (in Japanese)

Also, the 4PM Seminar of the Forefront Physics and Mathematics Program to Drive Transformation (FoPM Graduate School of Excellence) was held on April 13. With careful consideration for infection prevention, it was the first time in two years that it was held in person. After a lecture on the origin of elements in the universe by Professor Chiaki Kobayashi of the University of Hertfordshire, the program students who conduct research abroad gave presentations, and then divided into groups for lively discussions. The diverse group of participants, including foreign students, crossed the boundaries of their fields of study, and the exchange went on well beyond the scheduled time. Prof. Kobayashi was kind enough to talk with program students until the end of the session (photo).
