July 27, 2022

― UTokyo D&I Campaign 2022 ―

The University of Tokyo has launched a campaign aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion on campus, and making the university a place where people from diverse backgrounds can thrive. The initiative, called UTokyo D&I Campaign 2022, started in March 2022. Here, we introduce plans and actions related to D&I initiatives from members of the UTokyo community, including deans and directors of various UTokyo organizations.

Will D&I change materials science and condensed matter physics?

Hatsumi MORI, Director, The Institute for Solid State Physics

In materials science and condensed matter physics, which spans physics, chemistry, biology and engineering, a significant gender imbalance exists. However, advanced research in this field is developing into interdisciplinary areas that require diversified knowledge and backgrounds. Since diversity in gender, nationality and age of the researchers and students is crucial for further research development, the Institute for Solid State Physics (ISSP) is promoting its activities globally and advancing the careers of researchers and students through D&I.

As a part of our efforts to accelerate the D&I initiative, ISSP established the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee in 2021. Also, we organize the annual workshop “ISSP Women’s Week” and the two events: “Let’s look into the future” for junior high and high school girls and “We love physics” for undergraduate and graduate female students.
