July 29, 2022

― UTokyo D&I Campaign 2022 ―

The University of Tokyo has launched a campaign aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion on campus, and making the university a place where people from diverse backgrounds can thrive. The initiative, called UTokyo D&I Campaign 2022, started in March 2022. Here, we introduce plans and actions related to D&I initiatives from members of the UTokyo community, including deans and directors of various UTokyo organizations.

Diversity & Inclusion initiatives at the Historiographical Institute

Keiko HONGO, Director, Historiographical Institute

The Historiographical Institute is a comparatively small part of the University, and we maintain relationships in which all members of the Institute are able to see one another face-to-face. Through the hiring and development of female talent, as well as providing support for maternity, childcare, other life events, and in other ways, we have put Diversity and Inclusion into practice to support all our faculty and staff in both their professional capacities and private lives.

At the same time, there have been problems which have not received the deliberate and explicit case-by-case attention necessary for proper resolutions. Taking the UTokyo D&I Campaign 2022 as an opportunity for the D&I mentality within the Institute to be put into words, I would like to have us exchange ideas with one another, address unconscious attitudes, discuss points we cannot compromise on, and otherwise deepen our shared understanding and sense of community.
