Improvement in the prenatal and postnatal leave procedure

Takumi MORIYAMA, Dean, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

The University of Tokyo has a university-wide system for prenatal and postnatal leave, but the expenses to employ temporary substitutive personnel during the leave period are offered only for those who would take additional leave after childbirth for the purpose of childcare. The Graduate School and College of Arts and Sciences have set up a new original procedure enabling a new system by which prenatal and postnatal leave could be accompanied by the temporary substitutive personnel at the expense of the Graduate School and Faculty’s/College’s budget, without requiring childcare leave to be taken. This new and original procedure is expected to make working conditions more flexible and effective.
