― UTokyo D&I Campaign 2022 ―

The University of Tokyo has launched a campaign aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion on campus, and making the university a place where people from diverse backgrounds can thrive. The initiative, called UTokyo D&I Campaign 2022, started in March 2022. Here, we introduce plans and actions related to D&I initiatives from members of the UTokyo community, including deans and directors of various UTokyo organizations.

Fostering a Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences and Department of Mathematics free from harassment

Takeshi SAITO, Dean, Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences

A serious problem for us at the Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences and the Department of Mathematics is that the number of female students is too small. To improve the situation, by organizing the lecture series “Charm of Mathematics,” we have offered to female high school students opportunities to better visualize their potential future research and career paths through communications with female professors. We also formulated the declaration “Fostering a Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences and Department of Mathematics free from harassment,” as we think it is of crucial importance to maintain an environment where everyone can safely concentrate on their studies and research.

The declaration is posted on our webpage and at the entrance of every lecture room, seminar room and student office. We are not only raising the issue of harassment prevention, but also emphasizing the principles of diversity and inclusion. To realize these principles, we have started a “One-stop consultation corner for the Math Department” where anybody in the Graduate School and the Department can receive consultation about anything.

Let us create together an environment where everybody can study mathematics with peace of mind.
