Inclusive Academia Project

Shin-ichiro KUMAGAYA, Associate Professor, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology

In the STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) fields, which require experiments and practical training, the inclusion of students and researchers with disabilities is lagging behind. In 2020, as a Future Society Initiative (FSI) project, the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, based on the lived experiences of students and researchers with disabilities, started the “Inclusive Academia Project” in collaboration with the Disability Services Office, the Office for Gender Equality, the Harassment Counseling Center, the Center for Research on Counseling and Support Services, the Environmental Science Center and the Center for Research and Development of Higher Education to realize a campus where researchers with disabilities can play an active role. Barriers to the realization of inclusion are divided into structural and cultural factors, and multifaceted efforts are being made to eliminate them.
