CPAS Seminar, Globalizing American Studies “Insurance, Racial Infrastructure and the Financialization of Domestic Life”

“Insurance, Racial Infrastructure and the Financialization of Domestic Life” is a feminist and humanistic interrogation into the rise of life insurance in the United States. The project centers analysis that illustrates how racial difference and the domestic household anchor modern insurances’ practices of quantification, which collapse the value of life with formalized work. Drawing from existing histories of life insurance, slave/maritime insurance and workers’ compensation/workplace injury, as well as archival materials from labor and industry, the seminar provides an intersectional examination of how insurance operates as a foundational social structure of power and difference.
