映画史の記録は、映像を含む一次資料の喪失と戦う困難な作業である。香港電影資料館 / Hong Kong Film Archiveは設立以来、アーカイブとして資料を発掘・保管するのみならず、香港映画史における様々な課題や研究テーマについて学術書の編纂・出版事業をも携わってきた。2021年1月、開館20周年を祝う一連の企画の一環として、「サイレントからサウンドへ: 1930年代と1940年代の香港映画」と題したシンポジウムが香港電影資料館で開催され、世界各地から集まった香港映画研究の第一線で活躍する研究者が、二日間にわたって非常に内容が充実した研究発表を行った。シンポジウムの内容を、中国語の書籍『探索1930至1940年代香港映画』(上篇：時代與影史、下篇：類型、地域、文化) にまとめて2022年に出版されている。さらに、より多くの読者に読まれるよう、英語版Exploring Hong Kong Films of the 1930s and 1940sも電子図書として出版され、現在、中国語版とともに香港電影資料館のホームぺージから無料でダウンロードできるようになっている。
目次を見て分かるように、上下二冊と分けられる本書の内容が非常に多岐にわたるため、すべての章の内容について詳細に紹介することが困難である。下記に二冊の本の概要についてそれぞれ紹介する。
「Part1: 時代と映画史」では、この時代の香港映画産業はさまざまな要因からどのような影響を受けたか、そして映画製作者が戦争という危機の時代にどのような運営戦略を調整し、創造的な仕事を続けたかを探った。香港の映画産業は早くも1910年代から存在していたが、産業として栄えるようになったのは1930年代以降のことである。この最初の黄金期は世界が戦争に巻き込まれていく時代とも重なる。中国本土で抗日戦争が始まった後、本土から流入してきた映画人や資金など吸収しながら、香港で数多くの映画が製作されていた。一方、1941年12月に日本に占領された後、香港における日本人による上映および映画製作の活動について、これまで不明瞭なところが多かった。筆者が執筆した章Japanese Film Viewership and Filmmaking in Hong Kong in the 1930s and 1940s/Han Yanliは、日本側の一次資料を駆使し、日本占領期における香港映画業界の全容ないし当時の香港で製作された映画の具体的なテキストまで詳細に究明した。
「Part2: ジャンル‧地域‧文化」では、当時製作されたさまざまな映画ジャンルを探求し、映画の芸術的および文化的価値を分析した。当時の映画は人々に娯楽として提供されただけでなく、独特なジャンル「国防映画」から時代劇、さらに、女性を主人公とした武侠映画や大衆に感情的なはけ口を提供した風刺コメディなど、多様な映画が製作されていた。これらの作品から、戦後に繋がる香港映画の発展の可能性が見え隠れている。また、当時、香港の映画産業は中国本土と密接な関係があっただけでなく、海外市場も意識した映画製作は、香港映画がその初期からグローバル性を備えていたことを示した。
本書は、開館20周年を記念するための画期的な出版物として、香港映画研究にとって必読する基礎文献の一つになっている。
