Exploring and Disseminating Scientific Knowledge for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

  • SDG6 Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
  • SDG8 Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
  • SDG11 Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
  • SDG13 Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
  • SDG14 Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
  • SDG15 Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

With the development of state-of-the-art computer models of the Earth’s climate system, this project investigates mechanisms of climate system variability on wide spatio-temporal scales. The models are also used to estimate future changes. Such projection data are made available as the basis for impact assessment and policy decision making through international programs such as the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC).

Reproducibility of the climate and its variability by the computer models are verified against observational data. Refinement of the microscopic processes, e.g., within the clouds, is the key to the better performance.
