At the University of Tokyo, as more than 5,000 courses are held only in the senior division of the undergraduate program, it may be extremely difficult for students to choose courses from among those in the disciplines and faculties outside of their own. The University of Tokyo Online Course Catalogue is open to the public from 2012 as a system that allows students to scan all courses offered in the undergraduate and graduate programs or to search for any courses to find how courses are related to one another. This system can afford students more opportunities to study on their own, study more effectively toward their individual goals and explore new academic fields.

The University of Tokyo Online Course Catalogue is open to the public. Users outside the University also can browse the syllabus of courses and take a look at a fraction of the education the University has to offer.
