Transition zones between coastal and offshore waters are major providers of various ecosystem services in Japan. This study aims to clarify ecosystem processes causing its high productivity and biodiversity, and to examine issues related to marine use. These two approaches from both natural and social sciences are integrated to form a proposal for marine spatial planning for Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone.
