By implementing position sensitivity in 18 germanium detectors, the Doppler shift of de-excitation gamma rays emitted from moving ions can be compensated, which enables the determination of the energy of the gamma rays in the rest frame. The quantum shape of the atomic nuclei can be revealed by measuring the characteristics of the de-excitation gamma rays.
