Sushi Restaurant: Osakana-club Hama
The University of Tokyo’s Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute (AORI) is on the Kashiwa Campus, and there is a sushi restaurant next to the Institute. Now, the reason for this restaurant being there is not just because the Institute researches marine life. Actually, the sushi restaurant and AORI share a long history together. When AORI was still located in the Tokyo city of Nakano, researchers at the Institute would often eat at a nearby sushi restaurant. This restaurant became such a defining part of research life at AORI that when the Institute moved to the Kashiwa Campus in 2010, the sushi restaurant came along with it.

The University of Tokyo thus became the first university in Japan to feature a sushi restaurant on campus. Sushi restaurants may have the reputation of being somewhat pricy, but the one on the Kashiwa Campus is known for its “cheap and delicious” menu. For example, a sushi rice bowl with two types of sashimi in it, called a “One Coin Bowl,” costs only 500 yen. This rice bowl meal and the other items on the menu are popular with students.
