The Social Science Japan Data Archive (SSJDA) contains deposited survey data that centers on society, health, education, economics, labor, law, politics, and other areas of social science. Metadata information, such as purposes, subjects, and modes of data collection, is published through SSJDA Direct, an online system that is accessed from the SSJDA website.
The survey data is provided free of charge, primarily to researchers and students, to allow secondary analyses for academic purposes. Using the data provided, many empirical studies have been conducted on various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including (1) Elimination of Poverty, (3) Good Health and Well-being, (4) Quality Education, (5) Gender Equality, (8) Decent Work and Economic Growth, and (10) Reduced Inequalities.
In collecting social science survey data deposits from many researchers and research institutes and providing survey data to researchers and students extensively, the SSJDA provides the following advantages:
1. Releasing the metadata of the survey data from SSJDA will enlighten many people about the survey..
2. Storing deposited data in the secure SSJDA environment prevents the data from being scattered or lost.
3. Providing survey data that can be used as the basis of academic papers ensures the reproducibility of research.
4. Allowing secondary use of survey data will reduce economic costs and efforts. For example, it can prevent the duplication of similar social surveys. Furthermore, students who do not have the budget to conduct social research can use the data for free.
Besides research purposes, some data can now be used for educational purposes. Many dissertations are written each year using the data provided by the SSJDA—efforts that in turn help to foster undergraduate students and young researchers.
Thus, the SSJDA contributes to promoting research aimed at solving social issues and promoting the education of students and young researchers in multiple ways.
