Students are required to meet the language proficiency requirements set by the partner universities at the time they apply for the internal screening. For the requirements set by partner universities, please check the websites and Factsheets etc., of the partner university as well as the “USTEP Information on Partner Universities”. The score must be valid as on the reference date which is set for each call for application. Please refer to the application guidelines and start taking a language test early or checking the expiration date of your current score.
Please note that requirements of language proficiency sometimes vary depending on the faculties/departments even in a partner university. If you are not sure about the eligibility/requirement of a partner university, please address your question through the College, Faculty, or Graduate school of your current affiliation.
*It may take some time to confirm with a partner university. Please make sure to inquire well in advance.
If a partner university does not set any language requirements, all students must meet either TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS Overall Band Score 6.5 or higher (for those who study in English at a host university), or CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Language) B1 or higher (for those who study in a language other than English at a host university) as a requirement by UTokyo.
Please submit scores or certificate of proficiency test for both languages. If a partner university does not set requirements for both languages, please make sure you meet requirements set by UTokyo.
Students can apply for non-repayment type scholarships through the Division for Global Campus Initiatives (for details, please refer to the latest application guidelines). Students may instead apply for scholarships which offer more generous conditions. (However, students who receive such scholarships are sometimes not eligible for the scholarship through the Division for Global Campus Initiatives.)
If you directly apply for an alternative scholarship, please be aware that some scholarships set its application due dates earlier than the notice of result of USTEP. (Most scholarships accept applications from students who have not passed screening of study abroad programs.)
(Examples of scholarships for which students can directly apply. )
