List of opportunities

UTokyo offers many programs for international experiences and studying abroad. Most of the programs are open to students from all colleges, faculties, and graduate schools (*). Please check the list and find a program which suits you. This list may be useful for you to imagine how you would utilize the programs and become someone who has gained global competence through their student life.
(*) Some programs set additional eligibility restrictions (timing of applications, academic scores, etc.)

Description of Each Program

GLP-GEfIL

【Overview・Objective】
GLP-GEfIL is a special education program which is open to selected UTokyo students. Its purpose is to nurture leaders in a global society. It offers opportunities like independent research projects and programs overseas in which students are expected to actively participate. Through these opportunities, students can acquire English communication skills, accommodative skills to collaborate with people with different specialties, and imagination necessary to find an innovative resolution for global issues.
【Contents・Target】
-All lectures are delivered in English
-Four core activities
[GEfIL Independent Research Project PHASE1 / PHASE2 (2 credits + 2 credits)]
Group activities with interdisciplinary/international team members, Active learning in English, interaction with international entrepreneurs and experts, learning and practicing interdisciplinary research and presentation skills
[Global Leader lectures (2 credits)]
Lectures by top international entrepreneurs and experts
[GEfIL Abroad Programs]
Students are required to participate twice, and students are able to receive scholarships from sponsor companies
[GEfIL Common Courses]
These are courses in which students can further learn about the theme of their independent research projects
Official certificate will be issued.
【Comments】
GEfIL is a new curriculum launched in 2015 and the first group graduated in the autumn of 2017. We expect them to play on the global stage using the network established with other GEfIL students.

Trilingual Program (TLP for Junior Division)

【Overview・Objective】
The Trilingual Program (TLP) aims to enhance students’ proficiency of a foreign language other than English which is necessary for global talents.
【Contents・Target】
Students who showed a certain level of English proficiency are eligible to participate in the TLP and acquire skills of another additional foreign language.
【Comment】
Programs for TLP for the Junior Division is offered in Chinese, Germany, French, Russian, and Korean.

Trilingual Program (TLP for Senior Division)

【Overview・Objective】
TLP aims to enhance students’ proficiency of a foreign language other than English which is necessary for global talents.
【Contents・Target】
Students who showed a certain level of English proficiency are eligible to participate in the TLP and acquire skills of another additional foreign language.
【Comment】
TLP for Senior Division currently only offers a program in Chinese. It encourages studying abroad at Peking University in collaboration with the Campus-Asia Program.

Global Praxis

【Overview・Objective】
The goal of the Global Praxis is to offer opportunities in which participating students can experience an environment with foreign language and different culture, gain hands-on experiences of international exchanges, and nurture global outlook. The Global Praxis also aims to build “comprehensive knowledge” by offering opportunities in which students from various academic backgrounds can learn together.
【Contents・Target】
The Global Praxis includes joint programs with institutions overseas, short-term study abroad programs, and domestic internships with overseas students.
【Comment】
Students are required to check and confirm details of the programs by referring to the syllabus on UTAS and gathering necessary information from guidance sessions before they register for the Global Praxis.

Hands-on Activities

【Overview・Objective】
The goal of the Hands-on Activities is to offer opportunities where students can learn new ways of thinking and lifestyle by experiencing different cultures and values in places other than classes.
【Contents・Target】
Approximately 100 programs such as volunteer activities, international exchange activities, internships in industries, experiencing agriculture/forestry/fishery/local culture, internships in university laboratories will be held in Japan and all over the world.
【Comment】
“UTokyo Hands-on Activities” offer programs which are held in many places overseas and in Japan, including UTokyo laboratories. 20 overseas programs are held every year during the spring and summer holiday seasons. For more details, please check our website.

FLY Program

【Overview・Objective】
FLY program is a program where new undergraduate students take a special leave of absence for one year after they enroll at UTokyo. During this leave of absence, students can learn on their own through long-term social activities like volunteering, internships, and international exchanges, etc.
【Contents・Target】
UTokyo does not set a fixed plan for students in the FLY program. Students plan their own activities based on their ideas. Many students go abroad during their leave of absence.
【Comment】
This is the best program for those who wish to reset their mind after entrance examination and acquire skills to actively work on issues with no clear answers.

IARU Courses

【Overview・Objective】
IARU Courses are lectures for students from the IARU member universities, which are world renowned universities. Only students nominated from the IARU partner universities are able to participate.
【Contents・Target】
Four courses with all the lectures in English are held for 2 ~ 5 weeks from June to August.
【Comment】
This is a short-term intensive program in which students can acquire comprehensive skills which is necessary to be a global leader in 21 century in a top-level educational environment.

Global Japan Studies Program

【Overview・Objective】
Excellent faculty members from various faculties and fields offer lectures on Japan Studies ranging from fundamental to specific themes. Through the lectures, students can acquire the knowledge necessary to understand politics, economy, culture, and society in Japan.
【Contents・Target】
The Global Japan Studies Program offers a curriculum in which students can learn the necessary knowledge to understand politics, economy, culture, and society in Japan. Faculty members from a variety of faculties offer courses in English.
【Comment】
Innovation or renovation of Japan Studies is essential when we think about the mobility of future researchers and students in a rapidly globalizing world. English is a “universal language” spreading worldwide, so we need to think about the “meaning of learning in/about Japan” more fundamentally than ever.

University-wide Student Exchange Program

【Overview・Objective】
“USTEP (Outbound)” is a program where students are given educational opportunities to study abroad at an overseas university (hereinafter referred to as “partner university”) with which the University of Tokyo has concluded a memorandum on university-wide student exchange for a semester or for several semesters in a one year period.
【Contents・Target】
During the exchange period, tuition at the partner university will not be levied and only payment of the tuition specified by the University of Tokyo to the University of Tokyo is required. The period of enrolment while studying abroad shall be counted in the period necessary for completion of a degree at UTokyo. (The status during the study-abroad period shall be “Study Abroad” or “Receiving Entrusted Research Guidance” and not “Leave of Absence”.)

Students can study abroad for half a year- a year through USTEP. We believe you will be able to find a study abroad destination which matches your needs.

Short-term study abroad programs for UTokyo students

【Overview・Objective】
This category includes; short-term summer/winter programs conducted by overseas universities, tuition waived (or partially waived) programs of partner universities, and programs organized by the Center for Global Education (formerly the Division for Global Campus Initiatives) for UTokyo students.
【Contents・Target】
-Short-term study abroad programs will not affect your schedule for lectures in UTokyo, extra curriculum activities, or job hunting.
-Short-term study abroad will allow students to experience an overseas culture, interact with local students, and improve their proficiency in a foreign language.
-Short-term study abroad programs can be a step towards exchange programs or studying abroad at the graduate level.
【Comment】
The Center for Global Education (formerly the Division for Global Campus Initiatives) offers various short-term study abroad programs like language study, experiencing lectures, cultural experiences, and joint programs with partner universities. Also, these programs are relatively less expensive. Please check and find a program which suits you most.

Support opportunities for international students of UTokyo

【Overview・Objective】
International students from more than 100 countries across the globe are learning in UTokyo. Why don’t you support the internationalization of the campus by joining interactions with international students as a language exchange partner or by becoming a student support staff member in the International Student Support Office?
【Content・Target】
Any UTokyo student interested in interacting with international students can join us.
【Comment】
These opportunities are also suitable for those who are thinking about studying abroad. Similarly, those who have experience of having studied abroad and international students themselves are welcome. We also offer consulting service for projects which are mainly organized by UTokyo students (e.g. support for international students, networking events for international students, etc.).
