Message from President Fujii to International Students Waiting to Enter Japan

November 25, 2021

Dear International Students Waiting to Enter Japan,

We hope this message finds you well, despite the challenges of having to pursue your studies with us from outside Japan.

On November 5, the Japanese government released a new policy for entry to Japan. As of November 8, some non-Japanese nationals who had been prevented from entering the country are now allowed to do so. The university welcomes this new policy.

This new measure calls for additional screening by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) before a new visa can be issued. It also requires non-Japanese nationals to quarantine for 14 days in a designated hotel near the airport upon arriving in Japan.

The university administration is currently preparing specific entry procedures for you in consultation with MEXT. Please wait until the staff in charge of international students at your school, faculty or college contacts you for further information.

You are an integral part of our university community, and the University of Tokyo is committed to supporting your student life. Upon your entry to the country, the university will assist you with the expenses for moving to and staying at a hotel during your 14-day quarantine.

It is likely to take some more time before we can welcome you to Japan and to our campuses in person. Until then, we ask you to continue with your studies online while preparing for your trip to Japan. As president and executive vice president in charge of global affairs, both of us, along with our colleagues, are very much looking forward to seeing all of you here in Tokyo.
