UTEC-UTokyo FSI Research Grant Program

東京大学において先端研究を行う研究者への研究支援を行っています。

UTEC-UTokyo FSI Research Grant Programとは

株式会社東京大学エッジキャピタルパートナーズ（UTEC）は、東京大学をはじめとする大学・研究機関等の優れた知的財産や人材を活用するベンチャー企業に対して投資を行うベンチャー・キャピタル・ファームです。2004年よりこれまでに、5本のベンチャー・キャピタル・ファンド(2023年6月現在で総額約850億円)の設立・運営を行っており、東京大学発をはじめとする科学技術や先端技術に立脚したスタートアップへの支援を行っています。

UTECからの東京大学基金への寄附により2020年2月に開始された「UTEC東京大学未来社会協創基金」（以下「当基金」という。）では、今後の科学研究の礎となる基礎研究への助成プログラム「UTEC-UTokyo FSI Research Grant Program」として、東京大学において先端研究を行う研究者の方々への研究支援を行っておりますが、2023年度においても、本プログラムの新たな募集を行います。

本プログラムの特長としては、

  1. 研究にできるだけ専念いただけるよう、助成金受領後の報告書の作成を不要としている点、
  2. 求める成果を、優れた学術誌への論文投稿（ただし、人文社会科学の学術研究分野においては国際的に高く評価され得る学術図書の刊行を含む。）としている点、
  3. 基礎研究を重視し、短期的な実用化や商用化の可能性は求めないこととしている点、が挙げられます。

The University of Tokyo Edge Capital Partners Co., Ltd. (UTEC) is a venture capital firm investing in venture companies which effectively use the excellent intellectual properties and human resources of universities and research institutions including the University of Tokyo. Since its inception back in 2004, UTEC has made venture capital investments in 5 limited partnerships with the commitment of approximately JPY 85 billion as of June 2023, and has supported the activities of start-ups pioneering the science and frontier technologies developed by the University of Tokyo and other institutions.

In February 2020, the UTEC-UTokyo FSI Foundation (hereinafter referred to as the “Foundation”) project was established with donations to the University of Tokyo Foundation from UTEC. The UTEC-UTokyo FSI Research Grant Program was subsequently created and calls were made for applications to support researchers conducting leading-edge research at the University of Tokyo. The UTEC-UTokyo FSI Research Grant Program is now calling for new applications in the 2023 fiscal year.

The main features of the program are as follows.

  1. The need for reporting following the awarding of the grant has been removed so that the grant recipients can concentrate on their research as much as possible.
  2. The grant recipients’ main obligation is to submit research papers to prominent academic journals. However, in the fields of humanities and social sciences, academic research publications that are highly evaluated internationally are also deemed to meet the program’s requirement.
  3. Fundamental research is emphasized, but short-term practical or commercial viability of the research project is not required.

This grant program is for research in the fields of natural/applied/social sciences or humanities.

助成の内容 / Outline of the Grant

  1. 助成の対象となる費用
    今後の学術研究の礎となる基礎研究領域の開拓、基盤技術の開発などを行う上で必要となる費用の助成を行う。
  2. 助成金額
    Aタイプ：1件（最長2年間）あたり、2,000万円程度を上限とする。
    Bタイプ：1件（最長2年間）あたり、500万円程度を上限とする。
    ※2021年度公募の採択状況 Aタイプ：10件、Bタイプ：7件
  3. 助成期間
    最長2年間（2024年度及び2025年度の予定。）
  4. 採択件数
    10件程度。
  1. Aim for use of the Grant
    Subsidy to cover expenses to develop fundamental research areas and fundamental technology, which will become the cornerstone of future academic research.
  2. Grant Amount and Duration
    Type A: Around JPY 20 million per project for a duration of two years (FY 2024 and 2025).
    Type B: Around JPY 5 million per project for a duration of two years (FY 2024 and 2025).
    *Adopted applications for FY2021: Type A: 10, Type B: 7
  3. Number of Research Projects to be Selected
    Around 10 projects.

申請者資格 / Eligibility

  1. 2024年4月1日時点で本学と雇用関係にある研究者。（なお、応募時点で本学と雇用関係にない場合に限り、東京大学の教授もしくは准教授の推薦を必要とする。）
  2. 年齢制限は無いが、若手研究者（概ね、学位取得後15年以内の者）の積極的応募を期待する。なお、出産や育児などのライフイベントによる研究歴の中断がある場合には、申請書の備考欄にその旨を記載すること。国籍は問わない。
  3. 他の競争的資金の獲得により過度の集中が無いことが考慮されることに留意すること。
  1. Researchers who have an employment relationship with the University of Tokyo as of April 1, 2024. A recommendation from a professor or associate professor of the University of Tokyo is required only if the applicant is not employed by the University of Tokyo at the time of application.
  2. There is no age limit for application, but preference is given to young researchers (generally within 15 years of receiving their degrees). Any interruptions in your research career due to life events such as childbirth or childcare should be indicated in the remarks column of the application form. Open to all nationals.
  3. It should be noted that an absence of excessive concentration through the acquisition of other competitive funds shall be assumed.

応募受付期間中に、申請書を指定の方法（所定の様式により、A4サイズで合計7ページを上限とする。提出書類のファイル名は「提出日（西暦8桁）・氏名」とすること。）で提出すること。

  1. Those who wish to apply for the grant program should submit the prescribed application form (a maximum of 7 pages of A4 paper in total) through the designated online system by the deadline. The title of the application form should be “Date of Submission (8 digits in western style (YYYYMMDD)), Name”. The application form should be written in Japanese or English.

選考方法 / Selection Process

選考委員の書類選考を経て、UTEC-UTokyo FSI Research Grant Program 運営委員会が面接選考を行い助成対象者等を決定する。なお、詳細な日程は面接選考へ進む者にのみ通知する。
・書類選考期間： 2023年9月（予定）
・面接選考期間： 2023年11月中旬（予定）

Following the screening of applications by the selection committee members, the UTEC-UTokyo FSI Research Grant Program Steering Committee will interview candidates to determine the grant recipients. The detailed schedule will be provided only to those who proceed to the interview selection.
Application Screening Period: early September 2023 (tentative)
Interview Selection Period: mid-November 2023 (tentative)

選考結果の通知 / Results Announcement

採否の結果は、申請者及び推薦者に通知する。
The applicant and recommender (where applicable) will be notified of the results.

選考基準 / Selection Criteria

  1. 研究課題の学術的重要性
  2. 研究方法の妥当性
  3. 研究遂行能力の適切性
  4. さらに、以下の諸点に重点を置き選考する。
    1. 将来的に世界・人類の課題の解決に大きなインパクトを持つ可能性がある国際的に高水準な基礎研究領域の開拓、基盤技術の開発を行う研究であること。
    2. 研究提案の独創性が申請者や申請グループの着想によるものであること。
    3. 研究構想の実現に必要な手がかりが得られていること。

The steering committee will screen applications by focusing on the following criteria.

  1. Academic importance of the research topic
  2. Validity of the research method
  3. Appropriateness of the ability to conduct research
  4. The research project demonstrates development of internationally high-standard fundamental research areas and fundamental technology which in the future will have a great impact on solving worldwide problems or problems facing the human race.
  5. The research project demonstrates originality created by the program applicant or the applicant’s group member(s).
  6. The research project demonstrates feasible approach to realize the research plan.

助成金の交付 / How the Grant will be Awarded

本助成金の交付は、当基金から寄附金を採択研究者の所属部局に対して振替することで行う。
なお、本助成金は、助成対象者の研究に全額を充てることが寄付者の意向である。

The grant will be awarded to the grant recipients by transferring the funds to their affiliated graduate school/institute from the Foundation.
Also, it is the donor's intention that the grant shall be used solely for the recipients' research.

本助成金受給者の義務等の留意事項 / Points to Consider about the Grant Recipient’s Obligations and Other Responsibilities

  1. 研究の成果を、優れた学術誌へ論文投稿（ただし、人文社会科学の学術研究分野においては国際的に高く評価され得る学術図書の刊行を含む。また、国内で刊行した学術図書を英文図書として刊行しようとする場合や蓄積してきた論文等を英文図書として刊行する場合には、国際的に広く参照されることを前提とした内容の発展等を行うこと。）を行うこと。
  2. 論文投稿に先立ち、学術誌の選定等につき当基金に連絡すること。
  3. 研究の成果を外部発表する場合には、発表形式に依らず、当基金の助成を受けたことを明示すること。
  4. 論文投稿をした場合は投稿論文の別刷りを、学術図書を刊行した場合は当該図書を、当基金宛てに提出すること。
  5. 本助成金交付後、研究内容の報告書の提出の必要は無い。
  6. 本助成金による研究の進捗状況について当基金より確認することがある。
  7. 助成金の使途報告書を助成期間終了後、1ヶ月以内に報告すること。
  8. 申請書記載内容に変更が生じた場合は、速やかに当基金宛てに届け出ること。
  9. 採択課題について、本プログラムHP等で「代表者の所属部局、職名、氏名及び研究実施課題名」を公表することがある。
  1. Grant recipients shall submit research papers to prominent academic journals. However, in the fields of humanities and social sciences, academic research publications which are highly evaluated internationally are also deemed to meet the program’s requirement. If the grant recipients intend to publish an existing academic book published in Japan or an existing series of articles or papers as an English-language book, the content should be developed on the assumption that it will be widely referenced internationally.
  2. Grant recipients shall contact the Foundation officers about the selection of the academic journals and relevant matters with before submitting a paper to the journal.
  3. Grant recipients shall specify that the grant was awarded by the Foundation when publicizing the research findings in oral, written or social media presentations.
  4. Grant recipients shall submit the paper’s reprint or the academic book to the Foundation officers when submitting research papers to journals or publishing an academic book.
  5. Grant recipients do not have to submit any progress or final report of the research project once the grant has been awarded.
  6. Grant recipients may be asked by the Foundation about the progress of the research.
  7. Grant recipients shall submit a grant usage report within one month after the end of the grant period.
  8. Grant recipients shall promptly notify the Foundation when the content described in the application form changes.
  9. The affiliation of the granted project representative, their position, name and the research theme may be released on the program website or other media.
