Misaki Marine Biological Station, the University of Tokyo, launched the Miura Pearl Project in 2013 with the goal of reviving the pearl cultivation, developing teaching materials for education on marine biology, and revitalizing local communities in Miura City. The project is based on a collaboration among a number of organizations, including the local governments of Miura City and Kanagawa Prefecture, Mikimoto & Co., Ltd., Keikyu Corporation, Kanagawa Prefectural Marine Science High School, Keikyu Aburatsubo Marine Park Company and the Miura Fishermen’s Cooperative Association and the University of Tokyo’s Misaki Marine Biological Station. We wish to expand the collaboration to include other departments of the University of Tokyo, and develop the Miura Pearl Project as an activity of the University of Tokyo’s Future Society Initiative to contribute to the maintenance of the marine environment and the revitalization of local communities.
