Ever since assuming the leadership of the University of Tokyo, I’ve wanted to share my thoughts and activities as president with members of the university, as well as the larger community outside our institution. With my research field being connected to the ocean, I’d always kept a log during my time conducting surveys and being out at sea. Now, having embarked on my journey as UTokyo’s skipper, I would like to share with all of you my record of this latest voyage, through the UTokyo President’s Log.
Teruo Fujii, 31st President of the University of Tokyo

I attended the World Econonomic Forum Annual Meeting, also known as Davos (after the Swiss alpine town where the yearly gathering is held). Participants from various fields, including the political, business, industrial and academic realms, and the nongovermental and nonprofit sectors, assembled for the presentations, speeches, panel discussions and so on organized for the meeting. I participated as a speaker during the session of the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF), a group comprising presidents of the world’s top 29 universities.
I attended numerous sessions and met with many global leaders. Here, I am pictured with CEO Richard Hatchett of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a global alliance developing vaccines against future epidemics.

IARU was established in 2006 to promote inter-university partnerships in research and education among its members, including faculty and staff exchange, research cooperation and student exchange.
This year’s meeting was hosted by alliance member ETH Zurich in Switzerland. In a session moderated by UTokyo, we put forth governance at world-class universities as the topic of discussion for the university presidents to share their approaches and views.
