UTokyo President’s Log

Ever since assuming the leadership of the University of Tokyo, I’ve wanted to share my thoughts and activities as president with members of the university, as well as the larger community outside our institution. With my research field being connected to the ocean, I’d always kept a log during my time conducting surveys and being out at sea. Now, having embarked on my journey as UTokyo’s skipper, I would like to share with all of you my record of this latest voyage, through the UTokyo President’s Log.

Teruo Fujii, 31st President of the University of Tokyo

The annual summer, interactive session between students of Princeton University and the University of Tokyo kicked off, and I joined the welcome party.

Various social events are organized during the session, held from early June through mid-July. I trust students from the two universities will deepen mutual understanding and friendship, and establish good relationships.

I attended GATEWAY Tech TAKANAWA 2025, a business event held at TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY in Tokyo, where I participated in a dialogue session with East Japan Railway Co. President and CEO Yoichi Kise. In our discussion, we exchanged views on the outlook for initiatives aimed at realizing planetary health, based on the theme of the industry-academia collaboration agreement between our two organizations, and the vision we’ll be striving for through such activities.

Our talk also helped raise people’s expectations for the University of Tokyo GATEWAY Campus, the first campus in Japan focusing on planetary health, set to be launched in autumn 2025 at the same site.
