Climate Change and Sustainable Development: Public Health and Policy
Date | February 17, 2020 |
Venue | Tetsumon Memorial Hall, Hongo Campus, the University of Tokyo |
Overview | Climate change has been set as one of core policy discussion themes in the SDGs. Indeed, the impact range is diverse; health impact by direct (extreme weather) and indirect (through natural systems such as malaria and wildfires) exposure. The impacts are mediated by public health capability and adaptation and disproportionately more crucial to socioeconomically more vulnerable people. There remains a need to embrace a more interdisciplinary approach in addressing complex environmental issues and exploring the role of public and private stakeholders. Experts in several fields at the University of Tokyo and Seoul National University will participate in broad discussions on the health impact of climate change, global governance structure and policy to create countermeasures for the challenge, and politico-economic strategies to achieve the global goal for sustainable development. Contribution of Nanotechnology to Sustainable Development Goals
Date | November 23, 2019 |
Venue | Koshiba Hall, Hongo Campus, the University of Tokyo |
Overview | Nanotechnology, the science which deals with phenomena occurring on a nanoscopic scale, is highly beneficial to our society. Its interdisciplinary character opens up the frontiers of diverse fields such as environment, energy, health care, information, communication, and electronics. Accessible contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as environment-friendly materials that use fewer scarce resources, devices that generate renewable energy, materials that are less burdensome to patients, and geriatric assistive devices, and social implementation attempts that offer significant potential for Society 5.0 are closer to being accomplished through the use of nanotechnology. On the other hand, the problems peculiar to nanostructures are gradually being clarified. Efforts are being made globally with consideration for the Environment, Health, and Safety implications (EHS) and the Ethical, Legal, and Societal Implications (ELSI) of nanotechnology––under the framework of state-led and international cooperation. It is difficult to say that Japan has been able to adopt this practice of institutionalization prevalent in China, the United States, and European countries; as national initiatives are under way to implement the benefits of nanotechnology to the fullest extent––based on its high technological potential and appropriate institutional designs. In this symposium, we will introduce the latest examples of nanotechnology in Japan, focusing on nanocarbon and cellulose nanofibers. Additionally, we will consider issues concerning the social system and how this system should be. Following that, we will elucidate the contributions nanotechnology can make to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Last, an understanding of the interface between technology and society will be utilized to facilitate a discussion of the potential and challenges of nanotechnology for the coming future. Ito International Research Center Conference the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege’s Special Lecture on “Peace, Justice, and Women’s Rights”
Date | October 4, 2019 |
Venue | Ito Hall in the Ito International Research Center, Hongo Campus, the University of Tokyo |
Overview | Since the onset of the violent conflict in DRC in 1996, the civilian death toll is estimated to have reached 6 million. In particular, in eastern DRC, human rights have constantly been violated by the 100-odd armed groups operating in the area. Most of these groups have been funded by both the exploitation and trafficking of rich mineral resources. Related to these mineral dealings and violence, systematic sexual violence has been used as a weapon of war with the aim of destroying the victim, her family, and her community. This event looks to offer a platform to understand the structural causes of sexual violence in a conflict zone and discuss how to realize peace and justice, where human rights of the socially vulnerable are protected. The lecture by Dr. Mukwege will shed more light on the latest situation of sexual violence in the conflict zone of eastern DRC and on his continuous efforts to ensure women’s rights (SDG 5), peace, justice, and democratic stability (SDG 16), and fairness (SDG 10) in the DRC. Moreover, this event will offer an opportunity to discuss with researchers of research institutions engaging in international security and peace building, and aid agencies committed to the resolution of conflict.. Segregation as a structural stigma ~Disability, gender, addiction and prison
Date | October 7, 2019 |
Venue | ENEOS Hall, 1F, RCAST Bldg.3-South, Komaba Campus, the University of Tokyo |
Overview | In the near future, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is expected to point out the segregation of people with disabilities in Japan, and there is a growing demand for a transition from isolated facilities to the community. On the other hand, in preparation for the UN Criminal Justice Council (Kyoto Congress) to be held in Kyoto in 2020, the Ministry of Justice has just launched a pilot project in which inmates with drug addiction and mental disorders will move from isolated treatment in prison to community support. In this context, we will bring together experts who are deeply involved in these trends, focusing on disability, gender, addiction, and prison, and looking back on the history of segregation caused by structual stigma embedded in societies. In addition, we consider the possibilities of Tojisha-Kenkyu (person-driven studies or user-led research born in Japan) as a means of implementing a non-violent liberation movement towards a society where no one is left behind.
