Tokyo College Symposium Series: Lifestyles and Society after COVID-19: A Long-term Perspective[2]

Date March 31, 2021
Venue Tokyo College YouTube Channel
Overview One year has passed since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though vaccination rollout has begun, effective treatments are yet to be developed. Many aspects of COVID-19 still remain unclear. Without showing signs of diminishing, the pandemic continues to bring uncertainty to society and people’s lives. On the other hand, we gained much insight over the past year into the impact of COVID-19 on institutions and people’s way of thinking, as well as the vulnerability of contemporary society.

Dealing with the present challenges posed by COVID-19 is of great importance. However, a long-term perspective is necessary as well. In this series of symposiums, we will reflect on lessons learned from the pandemic and discuss from various perspectives how to utilize these lessons to construct a more resilient post-corona society.

SDGs Symposium 2021: Interdisciplinary science solutions for food, water, climate and ecosystems Sustainable Development Goals

Date March 26, 2021
Venue ONLINE
Overview The wellbeing of our planet contributes directly and indirectly to human wellbeing in multiple ways. Our environment is a major source of food, materials and livelihoods to millions of people globally, while at the same time providing a habitat to millions of species, and regulating hydrological cycles and the global climate. However, ecosystems face multiple pressures including climate change, habitat loss, pollution and species overexploitation, many of which are often driven by economic growth, trade and urbanization. The combined effect of these pressures has important ramification for the sustainability of the planet, including human societies.

The interconnectivity between social and natural systems, also suggests the strong intersection between multiple Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) such as SDG2(Zero Hunger), SDG6(Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG13(Climate action), SDG14(Life below water) and SDG15(Life on land). Considering the important ramifications of ongoing climate and ecosystem change for sustainable development, there is an urgent need to generate interdisciplinary knowledge to understand these linkages and develop solutions at the interface of these SDGs.

Ultimately, achieving progress for the SDGs will require academia, business, policymakers and civil society to work together in a transdisciplinary manner. Nature, Nature Sustainability, Sustainability Science and its publisher, Springer Nature, play an important role in advancing the discovery and dissemination of evidence-based sustainability research. To highlight and strengthen these connections, on 26 March 2021 we are holding a symposium at The University of Tokyo. We wish to take this opportunity to invite some of Japan’s renowned researchers working at this interface to discuss with the editors the best ways for research to both explain these multi-faceted phenomena and develop effective solutions. We look forward to your participation in this event.

Beyond5G Driven by New Normal Social Practice

Date March 4, 2021
Venue ONLINE
Overview With the spread of new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), our social activities have been instantaneously forced to cease to function. It has become a new normal practice for all social activities to be carried out remotely through information communications. As a result, it is being re-recognized that the role of information communication will become more and more important in our society in the future. In the physical space, we collect and analyze a large amount of data in real time while protecting our privacy information and continue social activities while maintaining an appropriate population density. We thus create a virtual space that can be realized by information communication. It is necessary to make full use of it and continue social activities remotely. In information communication networks such as 5G, drastic changes are happening in data access represented by ultra-low latency, a massive number of device connections, high speed and large capacity, network virtualization / software, application to AI and machine learning networks. As we continue to evolve from various perspectives, expectations for Beyond 5G for further development are already rising. Based on these social environments, this workshop will host the presentations by distinguished experts who are leading the progress of information communication technologies in various fields and discuss the expectations and ideals for beyond 5G starting from “New Normal” and cutting-edge research and practical issues.

Tokyo College Online Event: “Reconsidering the Correlation between Electricity and Magnetism in Materials”

Date October 2, 2020
Venue Tokyo College YouTube Channel (Japanese language only)
Overview In solid materials, a vast number of electrons are strongly interacting with each other. While motion of one electron can be precisely described by quantum mechanics, it needs the higher-hierarchy concept and methodology to understand and explore new properties and functions emerging from these correlated electrons. With use of correlated electrons and their forming topology, it becomes capable to control mutually the electricity and magnetism in solids. We dream the emergent electromagnetism in a solid which enables us to transform the energy form with high efficiency and mitigate ultimately the energy cost for information technology.
