The University of Tokyo Statement on Diversity & Inclusion

June 24, 2022
The University of Tokyo has adopted the University of Tokyo Statement on Diversity & Inclusion (D&I).

In September 2021, the university announced UTokyo Compass, a set of principles, goals, and specific actions that will guide the university in the coming decades, centered on the theme “Into a Sea of Diversity: Creating the Future through Dialogue.” In accordance with UTokyo Compass, the D&I Statement was created based on an awareness of how extremely important it is for the university to promote diversity and inclusion in order to achieve academic excellence, create knowledge innovation, and cultivate human resources who can act globally. In recent years, the very concept of diversity has expanded to include gender and sexual diversity (including sexual orientation and gender identity) and lifestyle diversity, reflecting a broadening of values. In recognition of these changes, the statement is intended to make clear that the university provides opportunities to participate in its activities equally and fairly.

Having adopted this statement, the University of Tokyo will, in the years ahead, steadily make our campuses energetic places that anyone in the world would want to come to.
