After graduating or completing your studies at UTokyo, you will be required to return to your country, even if your visa (status of residence) "College Student" is still valid. If you wish to continue to stay in Japan for a while to prepare for your return, please immediately change your status of residence from "College Student" to "Short-Term Stay" or other appropriate status. You are not allowed to continue to stay in Japan with "College Student" visa status.
Also, please note that if your period of stay already includes a period of stay to prepare for departure from Japan after graduation (e.g., one year and three months, two years and three months, or one to two months after graduation/completion of study), in principle, you will not be able to change your status of residence to "Short-Term Stay" for the purpose of preparing to leave Japan.
Also, the permission to engage in activities other than those permitted under the status of residence previously granted is valid only while you are enrolled in an educational institution, so if you are not enrolled in any school after graduation, you will not be allowed to work part-time.
If you are graduating or withdrawing from your studies and UTokyo is acting as your guarantor, please inform International Support Group, Education and Student Support Department.

International students who wish to remain in Japan and seek employment after completing their course of studies with a degree, can apply for the change of their status of residence to “Designated activities (to continue seeking employment)”, in case they can obtain a letter of recommendation from their university. If their application is approved, they can stay for six months. The status of residence can be renewed one time for another 6 months (in total, 1 year at maximum).
※This system is not available to non-degree students. (Research students, Exchange students, etc.）
※”PhD candidates who have withdrawn from the University” can also apply for the change. However, please note that their application may not be approved or accepted.

・ Bachelor degree recipients: Certificate of graduation or Degree certificate
・ Master's degree recipients: Certificate of completion, Master's degree certificate

Regarding the "Letter of Recommendation" mentioned in ［6］ above, please consult your Faculty or Graduate School. The letter may not be issued if it is believed that you will not continue looking for work after graduating / completing your course of studies.
You may be able to apply for the change of your resident status to a "Designated Activities (for those who have a gap period before they actually start working)." In case you are granted the status of residence by the Immigration Services Bureau, you may remain in Japan until the day you will start working. To apply for the change, please ask the company (you have been accepted) about the procedure. Status of Residence for those who wish to continue entrepreneurial activities after graduation International students who have been engaged in entrepreneurial activities while studying at university and wish to continue the activities after graduation may apply for "Designated Activities" to stay in Japan for up to two years. International students who graduated from UTokyo are eligible for this measure (as of December, 2020). Conditions, such as a recommendation and pledge from university, apply. *The maximum period of stay allowed under this status of residence is two years and you must complete your entrepreneurial activities during the period. When you have completed the activities, please apply for change of your status of residence to "Business Manager (経営・管理 Keiei・Kanri)".
