UTokyo offers the Inbound Medical Assistance Service (IMAS) for international students studying at the University and the Overseas Student Safety Management Service (OSSMA) in cooperation with Emergency Assistance Japan, Inc. For details of each service, please refer to the following information.

■IMAS (university-paid) 24/7 medical and other consultations for international students (Japanese, English, Chinese)
UTokyo has contracted a specialized provider of IMAS (Inbound Medical Assistance Service) for international students enrolled at the University. The service is free of charge for most international students at the University. However, an application is required to use the service.
* This service is valid only in Japan.
* This service is not medical insurance and cannot be used for any treatment of disease or injuries. Please be sure to separately purchase appropriate insurance such as National Health Insurance.
1) Cost and details of the service

Telephone Consultation available 24/7, 365 days a year.
・Referral to an appropriate hospital.
・Interpretation service provided over the phone while in hospital or during transfer to hospital.
・Contacting the University if necessary
2) Application
You can use the service immediately after registration. To use the service, please call the phone number on the confirmation e-mail and inform your name, the name of your university, the graduate school/faculty you belong to, and your name. (Please be sure to make a note of the phone number so that you can use it at any time.)

・International students and faculty members/researchers who wish to enroll in this service and are not covered by the University may do so by paying the actual cost (2,110 yen). For details, please contact the International Education Promotion Group.
・By registering for IMAS, you can use this service immediately after your enrollment or starting your program at the university. If you arrive in Japan earlier, e.g., for moving or entering a dormitory, you can use this service from the day you register for IMAS.
・For regular students (undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs), the contract will be automatically renewed until the standard term of study (*). Research students must re-apply annually if they will stay for more than one year. For students studying at the University for less than one year, this service is valid until the end of their study program.
*Students who are enrolled beyond the standard term of study for reasons such as repeating a school year or taking a leave of absence can apply again using the above form upon completion of the standard term of study to continue to receive the service (expenses will be covered by the university). Please also re-apply when you continue on to further courses within the university.
3) Eligibility for this service (Students whose annual fees are paid by the University)
1.International students (including those on leave of absence) enrolled in the following programs.*
[1]Undergraduate students (Junior and Senior Division, undergraduate research students, undergraduate special auditing students
[2]Graduate students (Master’s course, Professional master’s course, Doctorate course), graduate research students, international research students, graduate special auditing students, special research students
[3]Research students in affiliated institutes and centers
*Below mentioned are NOT eligible for the service.
Japanese national, Permanent resident, spouse or child of Japanese national, spouse or child of permanent resident, long term resident (Those who are authorized to reside in Japan with a period of stay designated by the Minister for Justice in consideration of special circumstances (refugee, spouse or children of Japanese immigrants), special permanent residents specified by the “Special Act on the Immigration Control of, Inter Alia, Those Who Have Lost Japanese Nationality Pursuant to the Treaty of Peace with Japan” (Act No. 71 of 1991).
2.International Students accepted into programs based on the rules concerning the running of short-term international programs at the University of Tokyo.
3.Students given special dispensation by the General Manager of the Education and Student Support Department.

This program pays benefits to you in the event of an accident while engaged in educational / research activities.
The benefits are paid for injury, disability, or death resulting from an accident that occurs when you are:
(1) involved in a curricular activity,
(2) attending a university event,
(3) on campus,
(4) involved in a UTokyo extracurricular activity,
(5) commuting to or from the university, or
(6) traveling between university facilities.
*All UTokyo students are automatically enrolled in this insurance at university expense, so there is no need for you to complete any procedures to be covered.

・Incidental Liability Insurance (Futai Baisho): Provides coverage against third party injury or damage to property within the above restrictions.

・If you plan to drive a car or motorcycle, be sure to purchase an automobile insurance policy, since you could be liable to pay a very large amount of compensation to victims of traffic accidents that you might cause. Even if your driving is limited to just a summer vacation trip or other short-term occasion, always make sure you obtain insurance cover. Automobile policies can be purchased from casualty insurance companies.
・Students with bicycles are strongly recommended to obtain an insurance policy that covers injuries they may cause to others while riding. To protect you from paying the amount of expenses which were caused by bicycle accidents, you should purchase the optional insurances for the "Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research(Gakkensai Comprehensive Student Life Insurance) ".
Also, if you have "Comprehensive Renter's Insurance for Foreign Students Studying in Japan", your coverage may include certain cases of personal injury accidents. For details, consult with the International Education Promotion Group.
