UTokyo D&I

The 2nd D&I Campaign
Campaign Objectives
Among the Diversity & Inclusion plans outlined in UTokyo Compass, the University of Tokyo aims to make our initiatives related to “Nurture Inclusiveness and Capacity for Creative Dialogue” in particular more widely known both inside and outside the University. By doing so, we work to spread awareness of UTokyo Compass, as well as gain the trust of society, increasing international and domestic support and empathy for UTokyo’s role in the world.
In order to get UTokyo members themselves to notice and recognize the diversity that the University possesses, we will work to visualize various aspects of the University.

Deepening and advancing our understanding of D&I at UTokyo
On September 19th and October 25th, two seminars on D&I were held for UTokyo’s senior executives and administrative managers. The former was for executives and deans, while the latter was for the heads of the departments of the Administration Bureau and the administrative organizational heads. The purpose of these seminars was to boost their basic understanding and raise and sustain their awareness of D&I, as well as to re-examine and elevate our appreciation of D&I’s role as an important pillar of UTokyo Compass. Below are shots from the events.

UTokyo Africa Evening: Exchange event with international students from African countries
Africa is a region that is expected to experience growth in various areas in the future, and UTokyo aims to further its cooperation in education and research with the region. As part of its efforts to promote interaction with the region, UTokyo held an event with international students from African countries.
Twenty-nine students from 18 countries participated in this event. To promote a greater understanding of their countries’ cultures, the students presented displays of poster panels and local products. Some of them also shared the results of their research. The event created an opportunity for meaningful exchange between the students, guests and other UTokyo members.
Here, we introduce some pictures from the event, which was planned and carried out by a diverse group of students.

The University of Tokyo has promoted support for persons with disability and gender equality centered on the Disability Services Office and the Office for Gender Equality, which were established in 2002 and 2006, respectively, with a commitment to creating an inclusive campus. Accordingly, the University adopted the University of Tokyo Statement on Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) in 2022 and established the Guidelines for Students on Diversity of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in 2023 as well as implementing other measures.
This new center, also called “IncluDE,” has been established by integrating these two offices with the aim of strengthening research functions in relevant fields and promoting DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) activities more comprehensively. Through its efforts to connect various activities and research based on challenges faced by those in need and to promote gender equality and accessibility, IncluDE will endeavor to coproduce academic knowledge that will make it possible to realize a society where no one is left behind.
