FAQ

Q1: Is it possible to preview the rooms before submitting an application form?
A1: Yes, it is possible only when there are vacant rooms.

Q2: I would like my supervisor to sign on the application form. Is it OK?
A2: Yes.

Q3: Can I apply for KIV even before enrollment?
A3: Application is possible even before enrollment. Please submit a copy of the documents (Admission permit etc) that certify your enrollment period. Even if the documents are not available within application period, you can still apply for KIV, but please be sure to submit the documents to KIO later. Please note that we may rescind the approval if any falsehoods in the contents of the application documents were found out later.

Q4: If there are some available rooms, can I choose a room number myself?
A4:Room allocations will be decided by KIO. Residents cannot choose a room number.

Q5: I am currently a first year master's student and considersing applying for KIV. If the admission to a doctoral course is admitted while I stay at KIV, can I extend the tenancy period of KIV until completing the doctoral course?
A5: In this case,the tenancy period of KIV will be until your master's course is completed. You cannot extend your tenancy until completing the doctoral course. However, if you submit a notification of departure of KIV at the expiration of the tenancy, you are welcome to apply for KIV again. If the application is approved, you can continue to stay at KIV until your doctoral course is completed.

Q6: What if I would like to move out before my contract ends?
A6: In principle, The University of Tokyo does not allow tenant to vacate KIV room before the end of contract date stated in the memorandum. You may be asked to pay a portion or all of your rent upfront.

Q7: Can I extend my contract?
A7: Unfortunately, it is not possible to stay longer than the end of contract date stated in the memorandum. If you would like to live in the same KIV room, you need to re-apply for it.
