Programs Related to Faculty Development

1. The University of Tokyo Future Faculty Program (UTokyo FFP)(Languagae: Japanese)

   This is a practical, systematic program designed to improve the teaching skills required of university faculty. The program consists of eight sessions covering various topics including active learning methods and curriculum design through mock classes and the like. The program is offered online, four times a year (twice each in spring and fall). Participants earning the prescribed grades will receive a certificate of completion. The course is also offered as a common graduate course, “Teaching Development in Higher Education”, which graduate students can take for credit (2 credits). The course is currently being offered online. Currently available online through the UTokyo OpenCourseWare (OCW) site. Course instruction is in Japanese.

   
2. The University of Tokyo Global Future Faculty Development Program (UTokyo Global FFDP)

   The UTokyo Global FFDP is a fully online program provided entirely in English that guides and supports the participants in acquiring key educational competences to teach at universities in Japan and overseas. Over the eight sessions in the fall term, participants learn about and practice a variety of contents (course and class design, inclusive teaching and learning, etc.) through active learning methods and experiential learning activities. The program is also offered once a year as a common graduate course under the title “Teaching Development in Higher Education in English”. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of completion and graduate students will also receive two credits.

    

3. The University of Tokyo Faculty Development Open (UTokyo FD Open)

   UTokyo FD Open is a series of workshops and activities (seminars, open discussion sessions, etc. to reflect and discuss practical cases, and so on) addressing educational topics relevant to those interested in developing their teaching skills. 4. Online Course  (Coursera)

   A systematic faculty development (FD) program that is available on the MOOC platform Coursera. Two courses are available. The first course, “Interactive Teaching”, offers a systematic approach starting with the basics, and consists of eight sessions. The second course, “Learn How to Teach by 6 Min. Micro Teaching”, provides hands-on experience with mock lessons over three sessions. Both courses are part of an online program based on the UTokyo FFP that is designed to facilitate learning.

5. English Academia

   An online training program to help researchers acquire useful knowledge for academic communication and teaching classes in English. The program consists of four sessions.

6. UTokyo TV＆UTokyo OCW

   UTokyo TV ( https://tv.he.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ )  is a platform for public-access lectures and seminars while the UTokyo OCW ( https://ocw.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ )  is a platform for regular university courses. Both are available to a broad audience outside UTokyo and provide videos that are useful for improving research and teaching capabilities. Free videos are available on a wide range of topics, from the care of students suffering from emotional distress to lessons on active learning and teaching in English, research ethics, and the prevention of harassment. Please note that some of the videos are for internal use only.

1. The University of Tokyo Future Faculty Program (UTokyo FFP; provided in Japanese), is the largest of its kind in Japan and serves as the model for similar programs at Osaka University and other institutions. An official certification of completion is issued to participants. Graduate students can also take the course for credit as a common graduate course. Since its launch in 2013, as many as 1,023 individuals had completed the program by the end of FY 2023. Of these, more than 90% say that they would recommend it to others, and it is a popular program with a satisfaction rate of over 96%. There is also a cross-disciplinary network of individuals who have completed the course.
2. Participants of UTokyo Global FFDP (provided in English):
   -Acquire educational competences to teach at universities all over the world.
   -Obtain a certificate of completion that can be included in their resume.
   -Create bonds with colleagues from other disciplines and will have access to a network of alumni with information on research societies and public recruitments at universities. Satisfaction rates regarding the program and the lecturers are very high and participants of the program in the past have been from over 15 nationalities.
3. Features of UTokyo FD Open (provided in English)
   -Participants acquire and develop specific educational knowledge and skills and have an opportunity to reflect on practical issues.
   -Participants can create bonds with colleagues from different institutions and disciplines.
   -Participants are able to obtain a certificate.
   -The program is open to anyone interested in improving their teaching skills, regardless of the affiliation/institution.
4. Consultation and support on improving teaching skills are available at all times.
