Summary Extended professional development period that allows researchers to dedicate themselves to self-directed research and study in Japan or abroad with the goal of enhancing skills related to their field of expertise.
Target Researchers who have worked at UTokyo continuously for three or six years since being employed as faculty or who have worked continuously for three or six years at UTokyo since their last sabbatical.
Support Details Length of sabbatical:
From one month up to six months (for those who have worked continuously for three years)
From two months up to one year (for those who have worked continuously for six years).

Note:It is also possible to take the sabbatical in multiple segments.
Each department may establish its own requirements for granting sabbaticals based on the applicant’s age, job description, experience, etc.

  • A sabbatical of one month up to six months may be taken once you have worked continuously for three years (regulation revised on April 1, 2020).
  • Sabbaticals can be split up over multiple periods, and sabbatical start dates can be set flexibly, allowing the program to be implemented flexibly depending on individual and departmental circumstances (regulation revised on April 1, 2020).
  • Young researchers seeking to take sabbaticals overseas can utilize the UTokyo Global Activity Support Program for Young Researchers to cover the costs of overseas travel.
