The University of Tokyo Support/Consultation for students and employees with disabilities

Summary Guided by the spirit of the UTokyo Charter, the Office for Disability Equity (ODE) is dedicated to the mission of promoting an obstacle free (free of barrier) campus. We coordinate support provided by departments and other units to ensure that students with disabilities, as well as faculty and staff, can smoothly engage in their studies, education and research activities, and employment. For instance, to level playing field for students with disabilities, appropriate support and facilities must be provided in terms of both external and internal sources. For instance, for students with hearing impairments or who are deaf, the ODE can provide support to aid hearing as well as other support such as note-taking and computer-assisted captioning to add accessible text formats to lectures. We also loan out hearing aid system. For those with visual impairments or who are blind, there is support available for enlarging font, conversion to PDF,  as well as the possibility of loaning out assistive technology (AT) equipment. For those with orthopedic or mobility difficulties, the ODE offers support including the re-arrangements of lecture room, removal of impediments to make university facilities accessible, and exclusive parking lot. For those with other impairments, the ODE provides care and consultation according to their own needs. In addition, support for faculty and staff with disabilities is also provided through individualized consultation and coordination. Please feel free to ask academic staff or coordinators stationed at the ODE for consultations regarding your needs. The ODE is also looking for support staff who are willing to help disabled members of the university community. Training and skill-building courses for the computer-assisted captioning and so on are run for staff who are interested in learning about such methods of support.
