1.1 UTokyo COVID-19 Policies

Q1.What are the University of Tokyo's policies and efforts regarding COVID-19?

A1. Please see the following page for information on policies on conducting activities as well as information on other efforts: Policies and Efforts.

1.2 Classes, University Events and Extracurricular Activities

Q1. I would like information about the Diploma Presentation Ceremony, Commencement and the Matriculation Ceremony.

Q2. I would like information about classes.

A2. For detailed information on classes and exams, please check UTAS (UTokyo Academic Affairs System) and your faculty, graduate school or department. Q3. I would like information about extracurricular activities.

A3. In principle, extracurricular activities are prohibited when the Activity Restrictions Index level is Level 1 or higher. For policies regarding extracurricular activities, see the following page: Extracurricular Activities. For questions about extracurricular activities, please contact the central administration's Student Support Group or the Student Support Group in the College of Arts and Sciences. Q4. I would like information about using facilities for extracurricular activities.

A4. Whether the use of facilities for extracurricular activities is allowed depends on the Activity Restrictions Index level. See the pages below for more information.

Q5. I would like in formation on the FLY Program (Freshers' Leave Year Program), Hands-on Activity Programs, the Field Study Policy Collaboration Program, the Global Internship Program and other programs.

1.3 Tuition Fees, Scholarships and Housing

1.4 Overseas Travel

Q1. I would like information on COVID-19 with regard to overseas travel.

A1. While it is important to check the related information posted by the country to which you are traveling, it is also necessary to confirm required documents and procedures upon returning to (entering) Japan. Information may change frequently, so be sure to check the government websites and the UTokyo website below for information.

1.5 Research Activities

Q1. Are there any COVID-19-related precautions that must be taken when carrying out research activities?

A1. Please see the "Checklist for when Laboratory Activity Restrictions are Relaxed," which details basic infection prevention measures. Also, please refer to the "Guideline for Strengthening COVID-19 Infection Control Measures" which was published in July 2020.

Q1. How is time off taken due to COVID-19 infection handled?

A1. As an emergency measure based on the notice “On the Handling of Employment with regard to COVID-19” (released jointly by the general managers of the Environment, Health and Safety Department and the Personnel Department on Jan. 31, 2020), currently, time off taken due to COVID-19 infection is treated as “special leave” (paid leave). If you determine that you have been infected, please make sure you report the required information to your department.

Q2. For infection prevention purposes, is it possible to commute to work using public transit during non-peak hours?

A2. Upon consideration of its impact on your work, it is possible to change your start and end times and have staggered working hours. If you would like to do so, please consult with your superior(s) in your department.

Q3. Are there any precautions that must be taken when teleworking?

A3. Since teleworking requires that you work remotely using a computer, please refer to the Guide for PC Use when Teleworking and take all of the appropriate security measures.

1.7 Infection Preparedness

Q1. I would like to information on Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

A1. Please refer to the UTokyo Health Service Center's website for information on COVID-19.

Q2. If I or a member of my family starts showing potential COVID-19 symptoms, what should I do?

A2. Please consult with your local municipality by phone. Students and staff can also consult with the UTokyo Health Service Center.

1.8 In Case of Infection

Q1. What should one do if they become infected?

A1. If a group of five or more, which is the conventional guideline of an outbreak, students, faculty or staff of the same activity group are infected at the same time, and it is considered that there will be a significant impact on the education, research or operation of the university, please contact the relevant office in charge of your department.
